Introducing Frutilla Blanca, a one-of-a-kind white strawberry from southern Chile, June bearing! The fruit of Fragaria chiloensis is very sweet, with a flavor reminiscent of a white peach. The fruit also lacks the acidity of other strawberries! We are excited to offer the plants of this extraordinary variety so rich in historical and cultural significance. The Mapuches, one of the indigenous tribes of Chile, domesticated the wild form of White Strawberry and cultivated the fruit in large fields, where the berries were said to grow as large as a chicken egg. As the story goes, a French spy, posing as a botanist, was dispatched to Chile in 1714 to see what the Spaniards were doing in South America. When he returned to France, he took samples of white strawberries with him. These eventually cross pollinated with Fragaria virginiana, a strawberry cultivar from Virginia, to create Fragaria virginiana, the common red strawberry cultivated and eaten around the world.
