Description

Boy, are we happy to offer this native Texan grass in economical seed form. Ruby Muhly Grass is Pink Muhly Grass's "ruby" cousin, and this gorgeous ornamental grass boasts greater cold hardiness, native vigor, and an easy and quick growth from seed. Save a bundle by picking up a few packets of Ruby Muhly Grass today for years of brilliant color in borders and containers all over your sunny landscape.

Ruby Muhly Grass is a species of Muhlenbergia known as Ruby Muhly (though the old folks prefer its less romantic name of Seep Muhly) for its darker, redder blooms. Native to Texas and other parts of the southwest, it offers handsome gray-green foliage held in a lovely arching spray on plants that seldom reach more than 15 to 18 inches high and 24 inches wide. The flowers begin in late summer and continue through autumn into winter, turning from clear, sparkly burgundy through shades of mauve and rose to rich amber. The lovely arc they create on the plant has led to yet another common name for this grass—Halo Muhly.

But the real benefit of this Ruby Muhly is its cold hardiness. It survives the tough winters of zone 5 without losing a root, yet also withstands those punishing dry summers we all seem to be having more and more of these days. Undaunted® Ruby Muhly Grass is a long-lived, low-maintenance joy for any sunny spot.

Starting the seed is easy. Indoors, cover the seeds lightly or drop into the hole of the Bio Sponge in your Bio Dome. Keep them in a 68 degree Fahrenheit room until they germinate (within a week or two), and do not let the Bio Sponge or seed tray dry out—bottom-water it to keep it moist but not wet. Then grow them on in colder conditions—perfect for those chilly winter rooms. And if you want to start the seed outdoors, press the seed carefully into the soil as soon as it can be worked in spring.

Find a great place for this grass and then plant it freely, pampering it with excellent soil drainage and plenty of water the first season. Once it takes root, it will pretty much self-maintain in all but the harshest climates. You're going to see how Ruby Muhly Grass lives up to its name.
