A mini pak choi, Asian Delight, a Chinese cabbage also known as bok choy, is a leafy vegetable. An award-winning variety, and standout in garden trials, it simply crushed the competition. It withstands high temperatures and has unmatched bolt tolerance, producing yields that double that of other pak choi. Asian Delight sets small to mid-size, 5- to 7-inch Canton-type heads with a tender, tasty white rib; crisp, ruffled leaf texture; and a mild turnip-cabbage flavor. Use like cabbage or spinach. Eat raw in salads and slaws or steam or stir fry. Bok choy is considered a superfood for its nutrient rich content, having a high (top 20) Aggregate Nutrient Density Index score (ANDI), or micronutrient-per-calorie density. It is a good source of folate and vitamin K and also supplies niacin, calcium, potassium, and vitamins A, B6, and C.
Typically grown as an annual, Asian Delight Hybrid Pak Choi, a cold hardy herbaceous biennial, is a member of the cabbage and mustard family, commonly called crucifers, brassicas, or cole crops (Brassicaceae or Cruciferae). It grows vigorously to quickly form a tight, compact, semi-upright habit of emerald-green leaves. The plant not only looks good in-home vegetable gardens but is also suitable for ornamental use in borders, containers, and edible landscapes.
Asian Delight Hybrid Pak Choi is easy to grow from seed. It prefers full sun to partial shade and fertile, moist, well-drained soil that is high in organic matter and has a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. Consistent moisture is crucial for good texture and taste.
A cool-season, semi-hardy variety, one of the first to be planted in the garden, pak choi seed can be direct sown into the garden in early spring before the last frost date for a spring and early summer crop or in mid to late summer for a fall crop. Seeds can also be started indoors about 4 weeks before transplanting to the garden. It needs cold temperatures to germinate and grow and performs best when temperatures are between 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. It can be grown through the winter in regions with mild winters but may need some protection. Row covers offer added protection from heavy frost. Mulching helps to moderate soil temperature and to maintain soil moisture.
